JAY-Z Reveals Meanings Behind Every 4:44 Song

“I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything.”
Last night, JAY-Z released his new album 4:44 as a Tidal exclusive. He has now broken down the meanings of each of its songs for iHeartRadio. Regarding the album’s title track, he explains, “I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything.... It’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.” He also discusses the Beyoncé-featuring track “Family Feud,” which he says is “about separation within the culture. Like, new rappers fighting with old rappers, saying all these things.” Elsewhere, he discusses the opening song “Kill Jay Z,” which he says is “not to be taken literally,” and “Moonlightd,” which references the infamous mix-up at this year’s Academy Awards. Read about all of the tracks here.
4:44 will be playing from front to back on over 160 different iHeartMedia radio stations for the next 24 hours.
